TOKYO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed Tuesday as investors were encouraged to buy on the back of a solid lead from Wall Street overnight, but others opted to lock in gains after subpar domestic earnings reports and the market's recent run of gains.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 39.32 points, or 0.19 percent, from Monday to close the day at 20,844.45.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 1.55 points, or 0.10 percent, higher to finish at 1,582.88.
Oil and coal product, pharmaceutical and consumer credit issues led decliners, while farm and fishery, nonferrous metal, and electric power and gas issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
