BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Tuesday, dragged down by the biopharmaceutical sector.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.47 percent to close at 3,120.46. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.11 percent lower at 10,349.07.
Combined turnover totaled 407.7 billion yuan (63.5 billion U.S. dollars), up from 398.2 billion yuan Monday.
The sub-index of the biopharmaceutical sector lost 3.2 percent, followed by a 2.18-percent drop of the medical equipment sector and a 1.27-percent decrease in the cement sector.
Zhangzhou Pientzehuang Pharmaceutical dropped by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 116.84 yuan per share, while Hubei Jumpcan Pharmaceutical lost 5.07 percent to close at 51.11 yuan per share.
Bucking the trend, the coal sector performed well, with shares of Shanxi Coking gaining 3.71 percent to close at 11.46 yuan per share.
The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style enterprises, lost 1.29 percent to close at 1,773.65.
